Shorting anything that pays a dividend or interest is tough since you are responsible for those payments. One way the market can make it more painful on shorts is to keep raising dividends for S&P500 stocks. You figure the leverage funds have to do 2 or 3 times the dividends plus the cost of leverage.... a huge hurdle to overcome even if they get the timing right.
