I really wasn't attempting to change anything to a debate about tax rates. My curiosity was aroused when you posted the chart showing the relative personal tax rates for various countries. You said that we were in the middle in a way that led me to believe that you believed we should be higher on that list rather than lower. I was only seeking your opinion on what you thought might be a more appropriate level.

Whenever any politician talks about tax rates they typically discuss only "raising tax rates" or "lowering tax rates". Then one side then begins defining what the other side meant which is almost always exaggerated and inaccurate. As a result, no progress is made on arriving at a consensus for what a fair rate should be since no one will ever engage in specifics.

It's pretty much a philosophical exercise anyway since Congress will never give up their lifeline to campaign contributions via the sale of tax breaks for individuals and corporations. Democrats talk about raising taxes while selling tax breaks and Republicans talk about lowering taxes while selling tax breaks ... not likely to change as they wink at each other and pretend to have passion for reforming the tax code.
