Hi Kirk, One of the incentives that BMW got to build a plant in SC was that SC would purchase some BMW cars for state use. I wonder if those incentives and others supplied to other automakers resulted in a net income gain for those states.

At the end of the day....all other state taxpayers have to pay for those subsidies by having their taxes increased.

The southern states should have offered subsidies to the textile mills to help keep them in business and instate.

Toyota opened a facility in Texas ( to make pick-up trucks) and that made sense because Texas is the biggest truck market in the US.

In spite of new automotive plants in Miss., Tenn,, Alabama, and Kentucky, these states remain first as federal aid
recipients, and last as manufacturing hubs for the nation. Think about the billions of Federal dollars that floated Mississippi after Katina.......Mississippi is still dead last in economic growth.

California, Washington, and Oregon have self sustaining economies independent of Federal welfare and over generous subsidies to manufactures.

BMW should have considered New York State or California for their new facilities, because New York is much bigger auto market for their product.

Do you have any opinions about owning auto stocks at this point in time? I have looked at Ford (F), Honda (HMC) and Toyota (TM) but have made no decision thus far.
