HI Jerome, No doubt I defend GM as they have been a very great company to me - full disclosure. The metal is galvanized on the inner AND outer surfaces. After the paint is blasted away so too the the coating - with long term use or miles. The blame is the sand and salt. The is zero problem in states that do not have to use sand and salt. There used to be plastic liners as an option in the wheel well and no one paid for them. The market determines all. Bob
