Hi Kirk, I do not have a lot of Respect for GM...because they put profits in front of all other aspects like reliability, quality, customer satisfaction, longevity of a product.

If INTC...made computer chips like GM makes cars....your computer would crap out by the end of the second year of ownership.

I have owned at least six GM pickups and five Ford pickups. In every case the mechanicals of the vehicle out lasted body parts. On every vehicle I got at least 200,000 miles of use from it.

I do know at least 8 or 10 engineers that have worked for Ford and GM. Instead of making a part better (starters, water pumps exhaust systems....they only concern is to make the part durable enough to outlast the warrenty. I have heard this refrain about parts durability dozens of times.

If GM and Ford can make excellent engines, transmissions and drive trains (usually US made), there is no reason why they can't make a better body to fit on that frame.

As a consumer you have to come to the conclusion they just don't care.

I believe from what I have read that Toyota and Honda put far more emphasis on durability and reliability than they do on costs. That would be a novel concept at GM.

If we as consumers don't push these companies to make better products....things will stay the same.

For the moment I would stay clear of GM stock. Those recalls are expensive and the costs of the settlements for the ignition switch problems will be much more than anticipated.

I apologize if I hurt Bob Furman's feelings about GM. GM has been good to him....but its about time GM was good to the customer as well.

Glad to hear that your Ford van still looks great after five years. I'm considering driving a rust bucket in winter and a salt free vehicle in non winter months.
