It is hard to believe Apple didn't know that the amount of money they were waving around to GTAT would not significantly affect their business when it was slashed. If I were the SEC, I'd sure take a good look at who was short and what info they had access to.

Also, this "risk" should have been disclosed in the filings. Did you read the SEC filings (10K I believe) that discusses significant risks to the business? I've seen some "one trick pony" companies I've owned disclose that they could cease to be an ongoing concern if their top customer drops them. IF GTAT said the same, then they warned everyone.
