Once I retired (over 10 years ago) I paid off and got rid of all but one credit card. I was able to pay off my mortgage about then and was debt free. Since then I cash a check once a month for a few hundred dollars in twenties. Those go into a drawer in my office and I pull them out, one at a time as needed for "walk around" money. I pay cash for as much as I can and my card charges and bank balances are looked at almost daily. I also have LIFELOCK as one more filter. As I pay the card balance each month, at that moment I'm once again debt free. I've never had a problem but I know several who have. It's best to be cautious.
