I completely agree. I do everything legally possible to minimize my taxes, most of which IMHO goes to "charities" with a very inefficient administration (i.e. our government). I much prefer choosing my own charities with good administration (<10% admin costs) which better align with my philosophies.

BTW it's fairly easy (if you're retired) to keep taxable income below $74,900 and pay ZERO taxes on capital gains (within MAGI limits). It pays to do careful modeling at the end of the year in order to adjust short and long term capital gains. This year the SS payment and mandatory RMD will make it more difficult but still possible.
