Them charts are impressive, but only tell part of the story.
Kirk, I know over the years you have stated this around one's core holdings, but many people fail to realize the effect of dividends ( or interest ) and their compounding.
In one of my Dad's accounts, there is a holding of an initial $10,000 of SNXFX ( Schwab 1000 fund ) that he bought in Aug 1999, which appears to have sat untouched ever since. By NAV alone, its worth $15,000 today. With compounded dividend reinvestment, it's worth $22,000.
I personally have some Schwab 500 Fund that I bought in late1998 that has similar gain factor, even with a couple of sells/buys over the years buried in the numbers. Not saying this never went under-water, but while I was hearing the lip-flappers on the news complaining for years about first the market still being down ( NAV wise ), then being flat for a decade, I was in smiles being well north into the green.
Charting Programs don't seem offer up charts that show this. IMO, they are doing an injustice to long term core holdings by not doing so. Investment House fund charts do show a "value of $10,000" over set periods of time, but none will show this over long periods of time. |
