Indeed! The WHOLE TECH revolution is about reducing high cost labor with technology.
I read an article the other day about some fast food restaurant that raised the minimal wage for their employees... and then they let a few of them go... the news reporter interviewed one of the ex-workers about how the increase in minimum wages is working out for him... LOL!!!
I REPLACED the "cost accounting guy" on my product team back in maybe 1979 or 1980 with a cost accounting model I built in Fortran. I was pissed it would take weeks to get a cost update when the price of gold for gold bond wire changed... something so important it could cancel a whole project if one item changed price... It was pretty revolutionary as others might spend a week updating the calculations and I could do it in seconds with the mainframe computer and a terminal we shared.

Later on they gave me $700 to buy Lotus 123 and then MS Excel to test out to see if they were more efficient for me than writing my own programs.....

A few years after that, was managing projects with emails and reports I did on the computer rather than give to a secretary to compile and distribute... a few years later we had far, far fewer secretaries as we were all using technology to write reports, etc...

fast forward 30 years and we have technology at the airport greeting me when I picked up my rented a car... load balancing to reduce waits in lines... and today a few blocks from the Googleplex on my way to windsurf there were self driving Google cars on either side of me... soon they will replace the drivers in the Google Delivery vans that bring stuff to our homes from Costco, etc.... and a robot will take your order and perhaps even carry it to your table. They might eventually replace taxi and bus drivers....

One restaurant here eliminated wait staff during one of the recessions and replaced them with those hockey puck beepers. You order when you come in, sit down then pick up at the cook station your tray just like the wait staff used to do before they converted. They then advertised you would save 15 to 20% on tips...

One reason there is such a disparity between the haves and have nots is technology is making it clear what jobs don't take many skills.... and society is paying for skills.
