That started those with HSA's to ask the Docs "How much do you charge? Medical procedures became competitive.
Try asking that today. The doctors don't know and neither does the general hospital staff. If you really pursue it with the finance/administration folks, you may get a "retail" quote which nobody but the uninformed pay. Offer to pay cash (no insurance paperwork) and you'll get an instant 50% (or more) discount. Bob it's similar to car buyers who pay the sticker price. I forget the term you use for folks like that but it's not very complimentary.

After commercial insurance became outrageously expensive I self-insured for about 5 years before I became eligible for Medicare. The best thing about Medicare was that I no longer needed to go through harangues to get competitive quotes on procedures.

I think you're on the right track with your suggestion and think Ben Carson has made similar comments.
