You can have a bear market without an actual recession. Furthermore by the time people are discussing an actual recession by the numbers it's usually just about over.

We have had one of the longest bull markets in the history of the stock market with really poor fundamental values in stocks. In short we have a bubble.

The fact that it is an election year only makes the uncertainty over what will happen next year worse.

I expect fear to take the market down substantially more later this year resulting in yet another cathartic sell off where the average Joe stops believing that owning stocks will ever be worthwhile again.

Those investors will be wrong. Kirk and Bob will eventually rule as eternal optimists that know the overall long term trend for the market is up.

That said neither of them fails to take advantage of buying low and selling higher.
