During the Christmas holidays a man was taking an evening walk in a nearby neighborhood and noticed a marvelous creche (nativity scene). It was well lit, and very carefully constructed. The tiny sheep had real wool and their faces painted black . . . everything was just perfect.
There was, however, one anomaly. Each of the wise men was wearing a fireman's hat. The man stood and looked at this for some time, wondering what could be the reason for this peculiar feature in this otherwise perfectly constructed scene.
Finally, being able to stand it no longer, and it being early enough in the evening to make this permissible, he rang the doorbell of the house. A woman answered the door with a cheery, "Howdy, can I hep youall."
The man said, "I noticed your lovely creche, truly a remarkable piece of work, but I'm very puzzled by the hats on the wise men."
"Oh," she replied, "that's in the scriptures."
"In the scriptures?" he asked.
"Yayess. It's very explicit. In Matthew 2:2 the bible says the wise men had come from a far."
******* Note to all non-native English speakers, just to save lots of questions: In some dialects of U.S. English (which are often associated with the educationally/intellectually challenged) the word "fire" is pronounced "far". |
