It's my personal choice is to avoid all legumes that are not organic... so yes, I'd avoid commercial peanut butter.

The other factor in these commercial brands is the oils that are used... they're not considered particularly good for you either.
We buy a brand that has only organic dry roasted peanuts and sea salt... nothing else. It is not expensive.

Finally - I haven't followed the research, but it began with Rachael Carson and the effects of DDT on cotton and peanut crops when they studied the problem in the 70's. I haven't followed the research to date.

Web searches produce lots a of cross opinions from experts and non-experts it takes an incredible amount of patience and research to pull anything out of google. I'm sure somewhere someone has tested the modern crop of peanuts...but you never know today... look at Flint, MI and the wood pulp added to Italy's Parimison Chesse.

It's just all about the money.
