Dana,

The best information I have been able to come up with on the Pathfinder System came directly from NeoPath's June 24, 1997 news release ( businesswire.com ) in which they stated:

®The System consists of a microcomputer that interfaces to the microscope stage by means of position sensors which determine coordinates of cells on the slide and keep track of the
cytotechnologist's work. When the cytotechnologist screens a slide,
the Pathfinder System records the areas screened, and the rate at
which these areas were screened. It automatically provides a set of
objective numeric parameters to assess the quality of manual
screening of each slide. It also allows the user to electronically
mark the position of suspicious cells and annotate the specific cell
type. All of this data is stored and available for review on any
other networked Pathfinder System in the laboratory.

The Pathfinder System, in combination with the Pathfinder Net and
Quality Manager (QM) Software provides the reports and documentation
necessary to help satisfy the federal CLIA '88 quality regulations
and the College of American Pathology certification requirements.

The IR person for NeoPath has been promoting the Pathfinder as a cheap alternative to the TracCell. Could you clarify the difference between the systems?

From what I have seen, it appears the Pathfinder System only assures that all areas of the slide are viewed by the cytotechnologist and allows him to tag suspicous areas. If it is not designed to identify and eliminate from screening vacant space, blood, mucus, and other non-clinically relevant material like the TracCell 2000 or certain normal cellular material like the TracCell 2500, then it seems to me NeoPath is comparing apples and oranges. I don't see how the Pathfinder System would significantly decrease the amount of time needed to screen each slide. Although the Pathfinder System may increase overall reliability of the screening, it wouldn't seem to increase the efficiency of the process.

It also appears to me that their Pathfinder Net and Quality Manager Software doesn't seem to be a comprehensive system that manages the flow of information from the point of sampling to the doctor's report and the insurance billing like AccuMed's Data Management System.

Any light you could shed on this would be appreciated.

BTW: I notice you were on SI for only one day before the posters started fighting over you.<g> Perhaps it is your touch at the key board. I don't think anyone has ever posted on this thread before using emoticons.
