I believe we had the same option in the 70s.
when i was in high school back in the late 70's i was in an apprenticeship program and i believe i got school credit for it. this was in the los angeles unified school district.
I didn't need those credits to graduate my Sr. yr, so I just took classes in the AM and skipped out to work 32 hrs a week to save for college in the PM I usually skipped out on my "Athletics Class" which was for varsity players to work on our sports as PE. I probably should have dropped the class but they gave me an A anyway and I had the option to use the tennis courts if I had time, probably because the coach wanted me to play just on game days but I didn't feel it was right to the other players without practicing.... anyway, I digress. Back then, in CA if you worked hard and didn't fail classes, you had enough credits to graduate half a year early so many of us worked and did school for the full year to enjoy graduating with our class while making money for college. You may have done the same... had the option but didn't need the credits and paperwork...
