Marshall, I am under the impression that we are talking about the IBM System 360 or perhaps the earlier, smaller 1401. The tape drive stands about 6' tall with reels about 15" in diameter. They always look like they are out of sync because each capstain operates independently under control of vacuum activated switches in the tape loop. The chain printer makes a hell of a racket. When it gets into the right rhythm it is really obnoxious. The earliest magnetic drum system I recall used a bi-quinary code with flashing LED's reminiscent of your '50's and '60's sci-fi thrillers. The first RAM system had disks about 18" dia. which were visible behind their plexiglas door and gave the impression of being some kind of air conditioner or air filtering device.
