Apple has been fairly consistent with their approach to their own ecosystem. I'm not sure it's about "status" as much as it's about staying near enough to the front of the curve that your "captive" audience continues to feel good about owning Apple products. Since the trend has been to charge more for every new phone, they will continue to do this as long as the public is buying.

So far, there's been little evidence that they've reached the point where they have overcharged enough to reduce demand.
