I'm not sure I'm willing to pay the penalty to get the extra $250K exclusion... We each have our own homes about 1 mile apart... a nice walk or short drive and priceless being able to do what I want to do... (I came with a defective "yes dear" so I'm not easy to live with... Now and then the truth comes out and she blurts "you're not obedient! ) :) 1% savings... one reason I taught myself to invest was I figured in the late 1980s I'd want to get to $1M and that even 0.1% a year times 40 years is significant... and 1.0% a year compounded is HUGE! Most just don't get the power of compounding... how you make HUGE sacrifices to buy a home in a nice area then hold it "forever" and eventually it is paid off and the property taxes and utilities are a fraction of what it would cost to rent a 2b/2b apartment nearby!
