Remember that SS payments are inflation adjusted annually. 8% excludes that adjustment, so to compare apples to apples an investor would need about 8+X% per year assuming we have X% inflation. Plug in your own estimated inflation rates.

Regarding the poll, in addition to financial status, you are making a bet you will live beyond 82 for the delayed (age 70) benefits to out-return taking the full benefit at age 66. Not everyone has the same outlook for longevity. I posted once before about some very good longevity calculators that help making an educated guess about your lifespan.
