Hi Kirk,......
and buying a risky individual or basket of stocks, is about the worst advice I've heard
Its like this Kirk, when an investor swings for home runs a few strike outs are inevitable.

I did strike out on GTAT in 2014 . It turned out to be less than a 5K loss. But at the same time the INTC, MU, and Bac i had at that time more than doubled. BP that I bought in May of 2016 is now up 58%. Sunrun the newest addition to my portfolio (March of 2018) is now up 71%... and there is a list of others that are winners.

I'm not afraid to lose some money, as many on this thread viewers are risk adverse.

I've done well in good times, and was flat in poor times. Stocks with dividends have saved the day.

This month that just ended May 2018 saw my portfolio up 31%...for the month..Its the best single month that I ever had.

The biggest winners usually come from where you least expect.

I'm looking at some oil stocks to add to my portfolio, KMI will be another big winner down the road. With GE I will wait for the conference call after earnings to decide what to do.

I have not made much on options this year because Trump changes direction every few days and that kills the stock and the options for a few critical days.

I have never owned a CD... or a Government Bond...

I don't believe in partioning any part of my portfolio. I consider my portfolio like a mutual fund...As Peter
Lynch said... :"pull the weeds and water the flowers".

But I do have one advantage over those residents of California... I live in a hick town in the UP of Michigan where the cost of living is very low, State Property Taxes are minimal. A great house (with a few acres)can be had for under 100K. Add to this ....that I live within my means, and that I'm debt free....and more than a decent cook....I have never been envious of others and their wealth... I just wish them well and good health.

Many SI posters are very risk adverse....Its their choice and I wish them luck...but its not for me.
