You are seeing the flip side of a battle that (used to) rage in Canadian politics. While the US sees itself as a melting pot, Canada uses a mosaic/aggregate analogy. Meaning that everyone still retains their characteristics while contributing to the society. There used to be a battle waged (esp. by the French) who wanted more of a melting pot - which is rather ironic since they never "assimilated" themselves. I think what you are seeing is that some people in the US want a model closer to the Canadian one.

There are pros and cons to each and both systems can work well given the right conditions.
