My mother, RIP, was a teacher. K when young and 2nd grade when she got older. I remember she crossed the picket lines 50 yrs ago and said she thought the teachers were not as interested in helping kids as helping themselves. I also believe we couldn't afford the main earner to not work so that was a good face saver for the family.

The benefits were stunning. Great health insurance and almost no cost for our family even while I was in college then she got to retire at 60% of salary or something after just 20 years.

She got a lot of praise for being a top teacher in a poor district. She often said the hardest part was having 23 different languages spoken at home for her 28 or so kids as it made it difficult to talk to parents to tell them how to help their kids.
