"safe thorium reactors"

I had read that China and India are working on a thorium chain. I believe it takes several years to breed the isotopes but I've forgotten details. I wasn't aware there was any effort going on in this country.

Thorium doesn't make a weapon so the Los Alamos boys went down the U235 path. With all the messy consequences and byproducts.

I'm afraid the nuclear phobia is such that we couldn't get a thorium reactor in place in "blue" political areas...where the power is really needed. Though on occasion I do see remarks from the anti-fossil fuel folks that indicate nuclear hasn't been completely ruled out. It would be a tough sell.

I think the thorium path has great promise and could be in place long before the massive incestuous boondoggle fusion has turned into will ever produce anything. And it could be an easier sell politically than the new "inherently safe" designs such as sodium cooled and so forth.
