Speaking of the Permian...here's a picture I took in Texas south of the Permian showing some exposed geology. The lower half rock face strata are what's left of the Ouachita Range which was formed about the same time as the Appalachians in the east...225 million years ago when South America was pushing up against what is now our continent. This range in Texas, New Mexico and parts of Oklahoma dropped and later got covered by a vast inland sea...many times. The upper layers are the sandstone layers that form the Permian.

Cellphone photo at a distance...not the best quality. But its neat seeing the anatomy of a giant oil basin exposed.
