I think your first reaction is correct - how do you mount a ladder rack or tool box. That slanted side rail up to the back window blocks access. Even simple loading and hauling of dirt or beauty bark is made more difficult by those sloped sides - same reason Honda dropped them on the Ridgeline truck - just stupid.
