Bill, almost all college students were able to avoid and evade the draft in the Vietnamese war somehow, by staying in college, or going to Canada, or whatever. I wasn't really surprised that he evaded it, but I was surprised that he lied about it. Well, no, not surprised!!!
Except for the sons of military officers, most of the men who went to Viet Nam were the less privileged people in this society. I guess it is always that way, but it didn't seem fair. I do remember at my college, however, that the "peaceniks" were very involved in helping less fortunate young men protest the war by NOT going, but it was more the college students who were against the war at that point, and not that many people listened to the "longhairs". Later, middle American sentiment turned negative, however.
I do believe you could be an American patriot and not support that war, however. |
