The market rallied at the end of 2016 because of Trump. No one was buying the market after the election because of Obama Admin policies. The Trump rally is widely acknowledged to have taken place from the day after the election in 2016. The market discounts the future, not the past. For example, if Bernie got legs and it appeared he was going to win, the steep sell-off that would result would be his doing, not the current President.
