Fauci is more political than you realize. I agree. That was very apparent in one of the video updates with Trump. When Trump was optimistic about the hydrochloroquine results, Fauci immediately took the position that we had to do extensive testing first. Trump has preventing deaths immediately on his mind and Fauci has the typical FDA mentality. I side with Trump because of his focus on saving lives immediately instead of going through the normal FDA protocols. I think the difference is due to Trump's pragmatism as a business versus Fauci's academic rigor. To bring it to a personal level, if I had a very serious case of covid, I would rather try the drug even though it might fail resulting in death.
