Frank-Re: Internet connection charges. I just got this e-mail from my ISP that says this is a hoax. Following is a copy.
"I have received a number of queries about the validity of the following:
>> Subject: Internet access charge >> FYI.... >> Currently under review by the FCC is a proposal, filed by all local >> telephone companies, to impose per minute charges for your internet >> service, including local calls. >> They contend that your usage has or will hinder the operation of the >> telephone network. Undoubtedly, internet usage will diminish if >> users were required to pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has >> created an email box for comments, responses must be received by >> February 13, 1998. >> Send your comments to <isp@fcc.gov> and tell them what you think. >> Every phone company is in on this one, and they are trying to sneak it >> in just under the wire for litigation. Please get the e-mail address to >> everyone you can think of.
There is NO validity to this e-mail making the rounds on the 'net. This issue had come up in 1996, but on May 7, 1997 the FCC decided to leave the existing rate structure in place. The FCC decided NOT to allow local telephone companies to impose per-minute access charges on ISPs.
The FCC is due to provide a legal report to Congress by April 10, 1998 on the legal status of the Internet. It will be interesting to see what the FCC reports.
You can go to fcc.gov to find out more about these issues.
