Indeed.

My godfather was my Dad's best friend. He was a bit too short to make the SF Fire department until he spent a week in bed to get a 1/4 inch taller to pass the one test he failed... Then all I remember him talking about for 20 years was how he couldn't wait to get his pension. They didn't have kids so could afford to live in the nice part of the SF Bay Area, Marin and commute to SFO in light traffic before SF became so over crowded. I don't think he once ran into a burning building or plane but loved the job. Then when he got his pension, they moved to Arizona for a cheaper house, lower taxes and lower cost of living. I remember the look on my Dad's face at the idea of retiring when he and my mom where struggling as it was and still had three kids to help pay for college.

So, I've been aware of this for ages.

My mother was a teacher with a great pension, but she didn't live long enough to really take advantage... poor health habits and 2nd had smoke from my 3 pack a day father... so the real downside of pensions for families is there isn't a nice, fat 401K to pass on to kids if the parents die young... so in my mom's case she "earned" her pension but the family didn't benefit much. 401Ks are much fairer and easier to budget.
