Actually, David, the warning label was first printed on cigarette packages in January 1965, at the behest of the then Surgeon General. At the time, most applauded the warning label and made it a point to ensure the cigarettes they purchased included it, thereby attesting to the freshness of those cigarettes. at that time, about 70% of the population smoked.

BTW, the fellow who pushed so hard for the cigarette warning labels died at the quite young age of (I believe) 61.
