If I understand what you are saying, that Trump's motivation was to get his name on an aircraft carrier and be remembered as one of the greatest presidents of any time for bringing back jobs from China, for example, rather than for helping people for the good of helping people, then he will fail. If yes, then you are probably right. But, everyone is motivated by self interest. General George Washington was the richest man in N. America back in his days and his battles with the British for independence were for selfish reasons that happened to give us a great country because he and others of the day had a better idea on how to treat white people (they were far behind on how to treat people of color...)
