Diane, Is not Greenspan still in place at Clinton's discretion?
Yes, Clinton reappointed him for his 3rd term (he was originally a Reagan appointee), but he would have been a fool to do otherwise....
7:18 PM 12/8/1995 Greenspan renomination seen as certainty
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Clinton is virtually certain to nominate Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan for a third term...Various veteran Fed watchers said that a variety of factors make Greenspan's renomination extremely likely, from the high approval rating he enjoys on Wall Street to the fact that Clinton must get any appointment trough a Republican-controlled Senate.
"It is almost automatic that Greenspan will be reappointed," predicted Lyle Gramley, a former Fed governor and now a consultant with the Mortgage Bankers Association. "It is pretty hard to do anything but give the Fed kudos for the job it has done with the economy." .... Many Republicans have voiced support for a third term for Greenspan, who was first appointed by President Reagan and is viewed as a tough inflation fighter.... "
IMO, sure beats most (all?) of Clinton's other appointments (Elders, Espy, Cicneros, Brown, Hubbell, Kantor, Browner etc.) |
