No, I'm not overlooking multi-tasking, at all. The context of my post was that IDE in desktop workstations (as opposed to servers) gave equivalent performance to SCSI. In this environment most I/O tasks are essentially serialized to the actions of the user, the exception being print spooling. Burst data rate counts a lot more than intelligent queuing, etc. Moreover, Ultra DMA IDE overcomes most of the limitations of the previous processor-intensive PIO form of IDE architecture. Nope, SCSI is inferior cost-performance-wise except for servers.
