Yes, I am in Desoto County, and as of today, there have been 3 deaths in our county - actually we've had 11 total deaths of residents in the county. They were in hospitals in Memphis, and 1 in Oxford, I believe. We are just a suburb of Memphis, so most people are hospitalized there, as the hospitals are much better. My friend who passed away was hospitalized in Memphis. According to the health dept., there are currently 250 cases in my county, which has a population 187,000.

Yes we are relatively untouched compared to some other areas. I hope it stays that way. As to how the deaths are reported, this is what my friend, who is a nurse manager at the largest hospital in Memphis, has told me. She said that her impression is that if they have Covid, regardless of any other diagnosis, then that is what they are dying from. I've heard that from other friends as well. It has a pretty unique presentation when the lungs are involved, and I would not doubt a physicians conclusion that it's Covid, regardless of testing. I'm not sure why anyone would be incentivized to lie about the numbers, or massage them in any way, unless it was a concerted effort so one side or the other could be "right". For that to be the case, you would have to have coordination of all medical professionals involved with assigning cause of death. Am I missing something?
