I think I remember hearing those stories and it is how HP built up our sales force and passed IBM! I picked HP over IBM to work at mostly because there was far more opportunity for growth of a mid sized company to make more money for the stock... but also for how HP was far less rigid, engineers didn't have to wear ties to work, only when we traveled to meet customers, etc....
