The idea that we "ceded" Eastern Europe at Yalta is one of the most discredited ideas (urban legends) of the second half of the 20th century. What the hell were we supposed to do, start a war with the Soviets in the summer of 1945 with the war in the Pacific still raging? While Yalta was in February of 1945, Roosevelt and Churchill recognized that the Red Army's advance into Poland made Stalin's plans for the most important country in Europe fait accompli. It meant the "London Poles" would have no effective role in the post-war Warsaw administration, dominated by the communist "Lublin committee." Besides, any historian worth his or her salt will tell you that the Potsdam agreement had a far great effect on the future of European governments in post-war years. But, I'll spare all on the thread embellishment of that idea unless necessary.
