Shure, in twenty years or so they may be available in many areas and become popular, then again, wireless may knock the socks off of them by that time!!!"" indeed why?!? the answer is because the whole dynamics of pc computing has changed by the advent of fat pipes(cable modems). in the past advances in the pc world have been most notable in the cpu area. now with the current bottom of the line computers,speed or lack of is not a problem. the bottleneck for a large number of users is the bandwidth of existing telephone modems. with the internet becoming so popular, the connection speed from web site to the pc user is the area that can make or break the pc experience. remember the old days with bulletin boards? the way one had to use dos to navigate the board? graphics were 'cool' mosiacs of keyboard black and white characters. the 2400bps modem didn't allow for a 'gui' interface. now with faster-33.6kbps modems in wide scale use the interface is color with text and pictures. some video files exist on web sites but due to slow loading speeds they aren't too popular yet. cable modems make 'multimedia' web pages realistic. to use an analogy:what tv is to radio. cable modem is to pots modems. cable modems can make web pages --like tv-- voices and color motion pictures (video).pc-tv convergence the interactivity,upload and download,capabilities of cable modems also make for tantalizing propositions of video phones,video e-mail, etc.other than that the fast upload part of cable modems goes largely unused. look for @home to lead the way in this area. also look for online software stores with try and buy trials that can be downloaded using the cable modem.
