Great story! After I was born my father graduated SF State with a degree in "political science." That got him a job up in Eureka with the IRS going out to ask loggers to pay the taxes they owed after they spent all their high but seasonal earnings. He didn't talk about it much but he sure didn't like guns pointed at him.

My mother worked as a substitute teacher and gave half her salary to my baby sitter. When I was 3.5, my first brother came along and they moved back to SF. With help from the family and a CAL Vet loan, they got a house in what is still a poor town... They had a 2nd kid when I was five and money was very tight until my mom went back to teaching when I was 10 and my youngest brother started school. They paid a neighbor to take care of the younger kids until my dad got a piece part job that allowed him to take photos of buildings in the mornings then be home to watch the kids in the afternoons. It was a good move because the two friends whose house I hung out at after school since their father's were dead and mothers worked... are dead, one shot by the police and the other got AIDS. Having unwatched kids at home is not good for the kids future.

Anyway, it was great incentive to study hard and get out.... it would be interesting to hear how long Mr Tattoo keeps that job, goes back to school for a better job or moves on to an "off the books" type of job for much better pay that often involves incarceration.
