dale, why Tripp taped the conversations is something I have heard several explanations about. She originally said she taped them to protect her job. She was already in hot water in a Democratic administration after she willingly testified that papers from Vince Foster's office were removed to the president's residence immediately after he died. And it was she who saw Kathleen Willey coming out of the president's office looking disheveled, and went outside and talked to her about it right afterwards. On the other hand, she was a Republican leftover from the Bush administration, and some people are alleging she was a plant of some sort.

Paula Jones' attorneys subpoenaed her after reading her name in an account about Willey, and she became increasingly alarmed. Then when it became clear to her that she would also get ensnared in the Lewinsky affair, she panicked, and started taping. At least this is the charitable explanation. I am not sure we really know enough to judge her yet, or even really understand her role.
