Archibald Cox became an American icon in the classic New
England way: by losing an important office on a question of
principle. Drawn to the ideal of public service but deeply repulsed
by the murky reality of American politics, Cox was a New England
hero in the mugwump mold: putting principle ahead of interest and
preferring the consolations of a clear conscience to the spoils of
office.
