I always run the gas out of it, so it doesn't gum up over time.
Always use real gas, none of that 10% ethanol stuff - absorbs water and causes the brass parts in the carburetor to corrode if not drained or run empty. Costs a little more but worth not having to clean carbs - same thing for all my small engines - outboards, chain saw, leaf blower and lawn mower. Not all of which can run dry by turning a petcock and would require tilting the whole tool.
