Duncan and All,

Actually very few people realize that at the time of his assassination, JFK's popularity was at an all-time low. Upon his death, JFK became an instant hero. In death, he achieved a hero status far bigger than life, an image which has remained in the collective public mind throughout the ensuing years. Part of the reason for JFK's trip to Dallas was to marshall the party and boost his chances for reelection. I think it highly doubtful that he would have been reelected in 1964.

As an aside, one of the reasons there are no press photos of the assassination is that JFK was so angry at the press and their handling the news of his Administration, he had not allowed them in the front cars in the motorcade. I believe I heard that the nearest members of the press were riding 25 cars back. Then I have to stop and think; how many vehicles exactly were in that motorcade?
