Janice,
My source for the supposition about Monica Lewinsky is not a colleague, but a newspaper columnist and adviser (Little Black Box Forecasts, Rick Ackerman, rick@vval.com). Mr. Ackerman heard this proposition from a colleague of his who had known such a person. His summary is as follows:
Readers of this newsletter will know that I give no quarter in my conviction that Bill Clinton is by far the most dishonest and morally repugnant man (let's not overlook Hillary) ever to occupy the White House. Yet, based on a conversation I had today with a subscriber in(edited by me/JMC), I am compelled to at least consider the possibility that in the sex scandal that has engulfed the Presidency, it is Ms. Lewinsky who is the pathological liar and not our mendaciously gifted leader.
The subscriber believes that Ms. Lewinsky suffers from what psychiatrists call a "borderline personality disorder." This means that although she is not quite crazy, she is capable of self-delusion to a pathological degree. In present circumstances, she may have been rebuffed by Clinton and, as a result, fabricated the charge of adultery as an act of revenge.
Convincing Act
That she was able to convince Kenneth Starr and others of her veracity owes to the fact that people with her particular mental illness are invariably remarkably good actors. This is because they deeply believe that the stories they have made up are true. My source says that he has made a study of borderline personality disorder (BPD) to cope with a woman he has dated who manifests all of the classic symptoms. He notes that some psychiatrists will not even accept BPD patients because they can be dangerously beguiling, if not to say incurably disingenuous, in analysis.
He does not actually say what he thinks Ms. Lewinsky is doing.
