Hi Dan,
First, I would encourage you to read Paul Gigot's column from yesterday's WSJ. A reprint is available here: freerepublic.com
Starr's announcement of going to Pepperdine last year was a serious blunder on his part. I actually live no more than 20 minutes from Pepperdine so I would have been knocking on his door asking him what the hell he thinks he's doing! Why Starr did what he did, I have no idea. Maybe he was on the verge of closing the case and then some new info came up. I just don't know? Besides, many people are glad that he didn't go. The guy who would have taken his place is a career prosecutor and not a guy with political aspirations. That would spell doom for the Clintons.
As far as Whitewater being expanded. First, this was not the doing of STarr. The other allegations that have been added to Whitewater came from Janet Reno and her staff at the DOJ and a three member panel of Federal Judges. So, if people want to blame Starr, they should be consistent to blame Janet Reno and the three member judges for allowing Starr to expand his investigation. Maybe they should also blame CLinton for keeping REno at the helm of the DOJ. He really didn't want to keep her their but he'd take it on the chin if he had let her go. People would think that CLinton was trying to tamper with the investigations.
Yes, there have been millions spent on Whitewater. But the allegations of why Starr is investigating have merit. Besides, Starr now has no less than 4 different areas to investigate. Don't you think that that is a lot for one man to have. That's why it's taking so long, besides mentioning that the Whitehouse and others (IE susan Mcdougal and Webster hubbell went back on their words and decided not to testify as to what they know. On a side note, that's why there's another investigation of Web hubbell and all the money (possible hush money) he made after he got out of prison-but that's another complicated stroy.) I wrote earlier that each new scandal that merited a IC should not have been given to Starr but each to a new special prosecutor. That is why this is taking so long, besides that fact that this is a complicated investigation. That's why no one cares. If there was sex involved, everyone would care!!!! The facts still remain to show that an IC was and still is warranted. BTW, if you didn't already know, Charlie Trie will most likely be/or already has been indicted for campaign finance illegalities. You can be sure that Pres. Clinton's name will come up with many times.
As for the PJ trial. As far as I l know, the trial might be delayed and not held earlier or in May. The attempt of the Bob Bennett to get the trial date earlier it just a legal and tactical manuever that probably won't work.
When it comes to politics, anything is possible. So, yes, I'd be lying to you if I said "Absolutely not!, There is no truth to your claim that these allegations are being made so Republicans can be reelected." But, from what has come out over the last 5 years, I wouldn't put the accusation of elections to the front of reason why this is coming out. As I said above, the campaign election fraud trials will probably take over the ML fiasco in the headlins and this problem just didn't pop up because this time, it the democratic appointed DOJ that's doing the investigation.
No matter how you slice, dice, chop, or grate, there are serious allegations against this president and his adminstration. The most ethical administration ever has turned out to be them unethical. That you can not dispute. My saying this isn't about me being right and you being wrong. It's about how those in Washington abuse power. Whether they be Replicans or Democrats, I will always be concerned when there is an abuse of power, no matter who is in office. And when we have put a man from Arkansas in the presidency, a backwards state (compared to many other states) that's dominated by one party, that no one really looks at when it comes to politics, that was the hub of the exchange of guns for drugs for money during the 80's iran-contra affair, whose brother was a drug dealer, and who's friends were drug runners, you can bet that I'm going to have questions about him especially when he was the governor of that state throughout the 80's. |
