He made the point everyone is always in one of three states of belief: belief, doubt or disbelief.

Apples and oranges with regard to belief and knowledge, and I was not addressing the apples-lol.

This has nothing to do with knowledge, it is about a state of mind at any given time.

Everyone is always in one of those three states of mind. Always-lol.

Even if you have knowledge about something, that would still put you in one of the three states of mind..

PS he also said:" It fortifies my soul to know that though I perish truth is so.'

I loved this guy-lol

But it has been over 50 years since I have read him.

No you are confusing "knowing" and "believing" - they are not the same at all even though our language allows them to be used the same way.

Spanish has a better distinction into their language. I wish we did.
