Chromebook shipments to climb nearly 30% in 2021

Worldwide notebook shipments are forecast to grow 13.1% to 227 million units in 2021, with shipments of Chromebook devices to post the highest on-year growth of nearly 30%, according to Digitimes Research analyst Jim Hsiao.

Hsiao, speaking at a recent online forum on industry trends, said demand for notebooks supporting remote work and learning will persist with a double-digit growth in 2021, but shortages of components including diverse ICs and panels may also linger amid robust sales momentum in terminal markets.

All notebook brand vendors will register shipment increases in 2021, with Samsung Electronics estimated to log the highest on-year shipment growth of 75.9% reaching 6.5 million units, up from 3.7 million in 2020, according to Hsiao.

Hsiao noted Samsung has stepped up expanding its sales channels in Europe and Latin America since 2020 and will also strengthen Chromebook shipments in 2021, drastically fueling its notebook shipment growth momentum for the year.

Samsung's main ODM Huaqin Technology, based in China, is estimated to see its overall shipments, including those to US clients, surge 43.2% on year to reach 11.8 million units in 2021. This will enable Huaqin to replace Pegatron as the world's sixth-largest notebook ODM, Hsiao said.

Among the world's top-6 brand vendors, Apple will post the highest on-year shipment growth of 17%, with its 2021 shipments estimated to reach 19.8 million units. The vendor is expected to release more new models adopting its in-house designed M1 series processors in the year.

The top-3 brand vendors will sustain the same rankings as seen in 2020, with HP taking the lead, followed by Lenovo and Dell. Among them, HP's shipments are expected to register the highest on-year expansion at 15.1% reaching 59.5 million units, compared to corresponding shipment and growth figures of 46 million units and 12.3% for Lenovo, and 39 million units and 6.3% for Dell, Digitimes Research estimates.

Among diverse notebooks, Chromebook will be the biggest-growth segment in 2021 with shipments estimated to climb 29.5% on year to 39.4 million units. Hsiao said demand from education markets in Japan, the US and Europe will be gradually satisfied, but shipments of education-use Chromebooks to India, South Korea and other Asian countries will ramp up significantly in the year.
