David, actually I do believe in the death penalty, but I also believe that justice can be had by sentencing murderers to life without parole. The fact that she was apparently in a drug impaired state when the crimes were committed, is enough to cause me to feel that there were sufficient mitigating circumstances to warrant a commutation of her sentence. It has nothing to do with sex or religion. I just have a really hard time seeing a person who is contrite of spirit being condemned to death, man or woman. OTOH, look at some of those sentenced to death who still absolutely thumb their nose at society. The murderer of Polly Klaas comes to mind. I wouldn't mind seeing him fry. Nothing will bring back the victims, but even a contrite life termer could bring something of value to society as a whole. If it comes down to refusing to give judges a certain degree of discretion in sentencing, then I'm afraid I'll have to change my pro death penalty stand to being against it in all cases. I realize that too much judicial discretion is what got us into this predicament in the first place. Makes you realize how important it is to vote for governors and presidents with high moral character If Karla Fay Tucker is executed, I think we'll begin to see a strong move to abolish the death penalty. bp
