At least for the stocks I own... the model has changed a ton since the 2000 and even 2007 tops. For example, they moved a lot of variable mfg cost out of the companies while greatly increasing the "services" side for reliable income to keep the tools running. Mainland China might be able to buy knockoff supplies on Alibaba but most in regulated economies have to honor patents so my guess is it is a very reliable source of income that will drop but not vanish during downturns. That allowed them to start paying dividends, further lowering their volatility.

Still, I expect the business cycle to continue and right now I'm watching technical signs of a top.. no signals given yet but there are H&S top formations starting to form but they don't activate until necklines are broken. A new high on a price surge before summer vacations would eliminate these... so I wait and see.
